Cardinal resting on a Japanese Maple branch, Slate | 2018
PROCESS
Consultation
Each project begins with conversation. Meetings may take place in person or remotely. Scope, setting, and budget are discussed at the outset.
Design
Preliminary sketches are developed to explore proportion, lettering, and form. Once a design is approved, full-scale drawings are prepared prior to carving. All inscriptions are drawn by hand in the studio using calligraphic tools. No computer fonts or templates are used.
Material
Stone is selected according to the needs of the project. Slate, marble, granite, and limestone each carry distinct structural and visual qualities. Material choice is determined by context, longevity, and aesthetic intent.
Carving
Each piece is carved entirely by hand using mallet and chisel. This method allows for depth, subtlety, and permanence not achievable through sandblasting or mechanical means.
Completion
Installation and foundation work are coordinated as required. Commissions are accepted selectively to ensure proper attention to each work.
